Is there anyway that I can prepopulate my students into Tinkercad?

Permanently deleted user Official comment Hi Colleen,
You cannot load them in bulk via spreadsheet, but you could use the invitation code manually link students to yourself as a teacher prior to a class beginning.
If you go in that direction, it would be best to have parent emails ahead of creating each accounts.
We are considering this for the future.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
Thanks,
John

Cleared Thanks John. Getting parent emails can be tricky. You usually need to have both mom and dad, in the event a student lives in two homes. Can your team please consider this in the future? I am a media specialist, who has about 125 students in each grade level, and that is very difficult to manage from our end. It would be best if there was some kind of button where parents can enter their own information, once we let them know that their child is using Tinkercad at school. There are of course always different dynamics in every school system. Thank you for considering. Colleen

Cleared Without Project Ignite, the method for adding students to Tinkercad is a real problem. At present, I have to have my students enter my email address, then enter the invite code I generated, and then I have to either submit written proof of my status as an adult or pay a fee for every student to verify my credit card. There has to be a better way.
What is your recommended procedure for adding multiple students to Tinkercad?

Cleared If I have students login using their Google Apps (GAFE) accounts, do I still need to verify anything or provide them with a code?

Permanently deleted user Hi Mark,
Does this mean they just signed up with their email? Students who use and email will get standard accounts. (Student under 13 are not allowed to use their own email).
Only under 13 accounts can be moderated at this time.
Please let me know if I am misunderstanding.
Thanks,
John

Cleared The majority of our students (K-8 school) are under 13. I have them sign up with my email address. But I just noticed there is also a Google authentication option. It sounds like for our student population, that won't be allowed. So for students under 13 who use my email address to sign up, how can I as a teacher avoid having to verify every student in writing or via credit card payments?

Cleared I would love the ability to mass add a class a) it would be faster/easier b) I could control usernames c) I can do it ahead of time
I have seen that some teachers work with one account (maybe one for each class) which seems like a decent solution but I do worry about students altering or deleting other's work.
I appreciate the "moderate students" feature but I would like to be able to add a kid who already has an account to my list of kids.
-
Tgreenleaf Tgreenleaf The single account workaround is not ideal since we teach our students digital literacy that includes being responsible for your own accounts, passwords, etc. It's also really messy if hundreds of students are all sharing a single account.
John - what is the recommended method for signing up and verifying students under 13?

Permanently deleted user I am the computer science and technology teacher at a K-5 elementary school that has close to 1,000 students. With the new initiative with Makerbot, it would really be helpful to be able to easily manage large groups. Obviously, as some others have stated, getting email addresses for that many kids could be time consuming and difficult if not downright impossible.
Is there a way being developed for a teacher to be able to load and moderate separate classes (like Code.org and Kodable)? These sites allow me, the teacher, to create usernames/passwords, moderate student work, and facilitate growth and learning all without the need for a student's parental email.
This is a great tool, but this issue is a real downside and deterrent to its classroom use.

While we recommend entering a parent email, it is not required. All the students need is the teacher code from you to get started.
Also, we're working on ability for teachers to group kids they moderate, as its a popular request amongst several others.

Tgreenleaf Tgreenleaf That's good to hear. I was able to generate a code and add a new student by following these directions: https://support.tinkercad.com/hc/en-us/articles/226566228-I-m-a-teacher-how-do-I-get-my-students-signed-up-and-approved-. It's still tedious to add a class (or school) full of students one at a time but at least it's something.
-
Permanently deleted user Okay, thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated.
I didn't realize it was just a recommendation. Typically, I send out information to the parents about programs we are using in class, but that is easy. Not having to track down emails is welcome, too, especially when some parents don't own a computer.
Thanks, again, for your quick response, Christian.

Cmoredock Cmoredock ARRGGHH!!!
Is there no way to add students who have accounts from using the social providers? The only way to add students is for them to "create accounts". I have all my students login via Google, and the account is automatically set up and created. If this is going to be a usable tool for teaching, it needs a little more functionality. This was possible under Project Ignite...I miss PI!!!!

We just added this ability today. Any account can now enter a teacher invite code in their Profile page to be moderated by that teacher.

Cmoredock Cmoredock Christian P. This is a serious lifesaver! Thank you for listening to these threads.

Tgreenleaf Tgreenleaf I tried the invite code today and it gave my student access to Tinkercad immediately but also warned me that the child's account is temporary and will expire in 14 days unless I approve the account. I have two options -- yet again -- to pay by credit card or submit a written form and wait 3-5 days. Is this just a holdover from before? It's so frustrating as a teacher that this still isn't simpler/clearer. It seems like an improvement, especially if I can confirm quickly (imagine having 100 students rotating through your lab each week!) but I'm surprised there's not any information for teachers... no blog post or obvious instructions about all of this. Or am I missing something?
-
Christian @tgreenleaf: Once your student enters the teacher code they are good to go (forever)! You will also see them in your moderated kids page.
We're working on a video, but really all you have to do is give your kids the code you generate to access Tinkercad and link moderation to your account.
Just curious where you see a "warning"? In an email?
-
Tgreenleaf Tgreenleaf Glad to hear that. Yes, in an email from parents@autodesk.com: https://www.dropbox.com/s/e67uni67yuvfubl/autodesk%20parent%20email.png?dl=0. And then when I click "Approve child's account now," I see this "Permission Slip": https://www.dropbox.com/s/72ck5yj8blal8pq/autodesk%20permission%20slip.png?dl=0.
-
Tgreenleaf Tgreenleaf I really like that I can go in under Moderate Kids and see my students' projects and also tinker/edit their projects if needed.
-
Christian That email and permission slip are sent when a child signs up for an account, is identified as age 12 or younger, and enters your email as a trusted adult. You can ignore it if you used the teacher code instead as an alternative to unlocking the account and in turn linking it to yours for moderation.

Tgreenleaf Tgreenleaf Thank you.

Cleared I am a computer lab teacher in an elementary school. I just went through the semester and added all of my 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. They used "Sign Up," typed in their own login name, typed in their own password, used a random birthdate, used 2011, or younger as the birth year, typed in my ridiculously long school issued email address, (timed out and had to restart the tinkercad login), then typed it all again and it autofilled, then found the "invite code" and typed that in as well. This worked, but it took way to long to use in a classroom. This process took 45 minutes or longer for most kids. That was one whole class just to create the accounts. The second class the kids forgot their login credentials, or tried to sign up again, or remembered their login but mistyped their passwords. Of ocurse many kids got in without a hitch. But, I spent 2 classes helping kids log in, versus taking them through some of the beginning steps. Some kids did not need any help and were able to follow the existing tutorials on the "Learn" tab.
Now I need to mass delete these accounts, because there are just too many the kids typed in incorrectly. I want to import the class roster each year/semester/quarter, so that I can group them by grade level 125 kids, and then have their passwords set by me so I know they are right. I'd also love to have an easier password reset button. As it is now, the kids do not see it inside of the password box, and they try to create a new account each day they use the program.
Could there be added an "I'm logging in at school" button, or something that remembers the login and password? Sign In vs. Sign Up when Sign Up is blue, is very confusing for the under 13 crowd. I do not know a solution to that problem.

Cleared Can there be added a "Delete Selected" so that I can mass delete the students accounts I'm moderating at the end of the school year? At 693 kids, doing it one at a time, especially with the multiple clicks to "turn on delete" for each kid means it is impractical to get it done.
