SVG adjoined sides

I am trying to export a model for laser cutting. I want to reduce wastage by re-using cuts along edges of two separate shapes by having them next to each other. I would like that the SVG export would maintain these adjacent edges into one line for cutting. however the exported SVG joins the two shapes into one big shape. Is there a way to force separation of shapes without having a gap in between them? I hear that laser cutting separate shapes without a decent gap between can lead to overheating of the wood, a potential fire hazard.

an example would be two squares, one directly above the other. I would expect the svg representation to be a rectangle with a horizontal line, half way up the rectangle (like an 8), but instead I get a clean rectangle (more like a 0)
