negative space / intersecting two objects

Apologies if I do not explain this well. :)

Usually "hole" objects take precedence. What if I want to create "negative space" surrounding one object, so that when it is put inside another object they are not merely superimposed, but rather we get the true intersection? Really simple example: Take the letter A and intersect it with a sphere such that the A has curved edges.
