Embedding/printing text

I have my first 3D printer on order, which will have multi-color capability.  In the meantime, I'm designing a few projects here that inlay(?) text into parts.

Never having done this before, I'm assuming I should hollow out the letters with the Duplicate and Hole functions, followed by positioning Solid letters into the holes (a somewhat tedious process) or is that hollowing out step superfluous?

Secondly, I'm unsure what depth the holes & solid letters should reasonably be for 3D printing (IIRC, examples in the various text shape generators vary from 0.2mm to 1 mm.)

Any experience/guidance appreciated.
