insert one object into another.

I am having trouble with what seemed like a simple object move and I'm not sure if this is Tinkercad limitation or I'm missing a functionality.

I have two objects. One a solid cube and another smaller cube that has a particular sized indentation in one face. If I insert the smaller cube so as to have the indentation flush with the surface of the larger cube, Tinkercad fills in the indentation. That does not seem to make any sense.

Another example might be wanting to place a stored label piece with indented lettering onto a flat surface of another object. Tinkercad would just fill in the recessed lettering leaving nothing visible.

Any advice please?
